| Laboratory Manager Laboratory Manager (AH07-090) Reports To: Chief of Pathology Category: Grade 3 1. Sharjah Teaching Hospital Sharjah Teaching Hospital is a private, not-for-profit 210-bed hospital located alongside the Medical School at Sharjah University in the emirate of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. The hospital was established by HH Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi with the objective of providing state-of-the-art, world standard healthcare in the fields of Obstetrics/Gyanaecology; Medical and ardiology,astroenterology, Surgical Services and Emergency Department services to the Sharjah community. The hospital employs approximately 770 employees and has an anticipated turnover of Dhs.200million per year. Sharjah Teaching Hospital is strongly affiliated with the tertiary sector via the Medical School at Sharjah University which has a relationship with the Faculty of Medicine at Monash University in Melbourne Australia, and the dental degree course based on the University of Adelaide curriculum. 2. Position Summary The Laboratory Manager has operational management responsibility for the Pathology Unit as well as the day to day management of the Laboratory Technicians. The position also deputizes for the Chief of Pathology, in their absence. 3. Responsibilities & Accountabilities · In consultation with the Chief of Pathology, ensure that the key results defined in the Pathology business plan are met. · Participate in the recruitment and selection of senior Pathology staff members. · Work with the Pathology senior management team to maximize the attraction and retention of staff. · Appraise the performance of direct reports. · Provide leadership and support for direct reports. · Manage the day to day operations of the hospitals Pathology laboratory. · Participate in overall Pathology strategic planning as a member of the senior management team. · Financial reporting. · Initiate and implement actions to improve the financial effectiveness of Pathology, e.g. bulk purchasing of consumables, bulk instrument orders, etc. · Review and improve the cost effectiveness of the Pathology contracts and suppliers. · Manage the negotiations of new and large pathology contracts. · In conjunction with the Chief of Pathology promote the rationalization of tests and test platforms within the Pathology service. · Manage Pathology instrumentation & technology, including determining the feasibility of installing new equipment as and when required · Promote quality systems, measures and culture in Pathology. · Maintain good relationships with both Clinical and Service Units. · Initiate and manage change within the pathology service. · Develop useful working relationships with colleagues in other pathology and health services. Human Resources Management · Manage the staff within the area of responsibility through both a vertical reporting relationship and a horizontal professional relationship; · Manage staff through effective recruitment, retention, recognition and development strategies and ensure effective consultation and communication processes in place; · Provide leadership and support for direct reports, appraise their performance and ensure that staff receive appropriate performance management, professional training and development opportunities; · Provide a safe and positive workplace by enhancing occupational health and safety requirements, as well as monitoring the operations and continuous improvement of the safety management system. 5. Key Person Specifications Qualifications/Experience · Tertiary degree in Medicine or Science with recognised postgraduate qualifications in pathology. · Demonstrated effectiveness as a manager with proven ability to develop and meet operational and budgetary objectives. Undergraduate or postgraduate qualifications in management or leadership desirable. Key Behavioural Requirements · Able to work in a culturally diverse setting and be sensitive to specific cultural requirements in the provision of surgical services. · Strong management and communication skills · Commitment to the development of a cohesive Laboratory services team · Commitment to the provision of safe, quality health care · Ability to apply evidence based medicine, evaluate outcomes and key performance indicators and continually improve service delivery · Be patient centred · Effectively and efficiently manage resources in the delivery of a high quality safe service · Support a culture that values one another and that explores new ways of working together in the promotion of excellence and continuous improvement · Conduct all interactions internal and external to the Sharjah Teaching Hospital with the highest level integrity · Maintain confidentiality of all communications, both written and spoken at all times · Recognise, accept and support individuals from all different cultural backgrounds · Demonstrate courtesy, kindness and empathy to patients, co-workers, visitors and subordinate staff at all times 6. Key Selection Criteria (Skills & Experience) · Proven ability to interpret and coordinate the Human Resource and Financial responsibilities of a business unit. · Strong written and verbal communication skills particularly in relation to consultation, influencing and conflict resolution. · Demonstrated ability to foster a culture that encourages positive working relationships, a safe workplace, financial responsibility, innovation and productivity improvement. · Proven ability to exercise sound judgement and provide leadership in professional standards and ethics. · Demonstrated experience in the provision of pathology services in a international health care setting · Demonstrated experience in leading a team to achieve quality health care outcomes. · Proven ability to develop and implement policies and procedures as required. · Extensive networking capability and the ability to interact and influence key stakeholders · Demonstrated commitment to the process of Clinical Governance · Demonstrated ability to be flexible in different cultural environments. | |
